"A Country Trip into Fall"

Location: Hatboro Business District
Time: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Rain or shine.
Cost: Free
Website: www.firstfridayhatboro.com

First Friday Hatboro draws a crowd! The Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce is inviting area residents and visitors to take a "Country Trip into Fall" Sept. 5 when "First Friday Hatboro" adopts a country theme.

First Friday Hatboro is a monthly celebration of the arts, hosted by merchants in the borough's business district from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Friday of every month. Gold First Friday flags displayed outside business establishments signal free entertainment or an activity.

D.J. Dave Kim from Marlin Disc Jockey's, Colmar, will host a "Country Dance Party" in the parking lot of McMackin Tire Service, York Road and Moreland Avenue, with free line dancing lessons during the evening. Known for his "fun" and "personable" style of country western dance instruction, Kim has been a country western DJ and dance instructor for nearly 20 years. The event is sponsored by Willow Financial Bank with support from Impact Thrift Stores, Inc., both with locations in Hatboro.

Lochel's Bakery, 102 S. York Road, will offer samples of "country" pastries including Red Velvet Cake and Shoo Fly Pie.

A free hayride will originate at Jarrett Dodge, 335 S. York Road and stop at Hatboro Baptist Church, 32 N. York Road. For more vehicular fun, First Friday's "touch a truck" program, will feature a 1937 Oliver Hart-Parr tractor, courtesy of Tom Hauke from Liberty Tax Service in Warminster Township. Youngsters can explore the tractor, which will be on display at the Hatboro Baptist Church Annex, 50 N. York Road.

Next door on the second floor of the Hatboro Baptist Church, The Millbrook Society's Amy B. Yerkes Museum will be open and exhibiting displays of early Hatboro country life, including general store, farming, and household items from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Outside, on the lawn of the church, the Heavenly Brew Café will offer a concert by "So Goes the Day."

Musical entertainment elsewhere in town will include:

  • Classic rock, blues and jazz by John Alberto at Impact Thrift Stores, 14 E. Moreland Avenue.
  • Steve Pullara and his Cool Beans Band at Edwards Studio, 7 S. York Road.
  • Mojo & the Helper Monkeys with a rotating cast of characters playing everything from '60s Motown to Rockabilly and Snoop Dogg on drums, upright bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, banjo, steel guitar and tambourine, Energy Personal Training, 3 S. York Road.

HATBORO ROTARY'S ANNUAL LOBSTER POT DINNER

Location: Frank Jarrett's home, 680 Creek Rd., Ivyland, PA
Tickets: $35 each. Tickets must be purchased in advance. See below for locations.
Time: 4 to 10 p.m.
  • Fellowship - 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Dinner - 5 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Rain or shine. In case of rain, take-out dinners will be provided.
  • Dress casual.

The Hatboro Rotary Club's annual "Lobster Pot" fundraiser Sept. 6 will feature food, fellowship… and hot air balloon rides.

The "Lobster Pot" will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. on the 60-acre property of Rotarian Frank Jarrett, 680 Creek Road, Ivyland. Featured will be a full-course dinner consisting of either a pound-and-a-half lobster with drawn butter or filet mignon, salad bar, locally-grown corn-on-the-cob, homemade rolls from Silvio's Deli & Bakery in Hatboro, dessert, and coffee or tea. The event will be held rain or shine and takeout will be available in the event of inclement weather.

Fellowship will begin at 4 p.m.; dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. A cash bar will be available from 4 to 10 p.m. and Disc Jockey Jerry "Uncle Buck" Breithaupt of Hatboro will be on hand to make sure there's music for every taste. Outside beverages are not permitted.

Guests at the "Lobster Pot," which raises funds for local community projects and charities, can get a ride in a tethered hot-air balloon, sponsored by Hatboro Federal Savings, from 6 to 9 p.m. Cost of a ride is $10. Other fundraisers will be a 50-50 drawing and a raffle for prizes.

The club also will pull the winning ticket for a Dodge Nitro SUV it's raffling to raise money for a clean water project in Tanzania. Tickets, which have been on sale since last year's event, are $30, or two for $50. The winner receives either a two-year lease on the Nitro, $10,000 in cash, or credit on a vehicle of his or her choice from Jarrett Dodge in Hatboro. The club's goal is to sell 1,000 tickets. As part of its commitment to Rotary International, the Hatboro club is arranging for a well to be dug in a Tanzanian village which does not have drinkable water.

If tradition holds, guests at the "Lobster Pot" will experience the landing of a glider plane, the transportation of choice for Lou Hull of Southampton, a long-time member of the Willow Grove Rotary Club and an annual visitor at the event.

Tickets for the "Lobster Pot," which must be purchased in advance, are $35 and are available from any Hatboro Rotarian or at the following Hatboro locations:
