When OFR is approached by the wounded or their families they are asked to fill out a Requests for Assistance Form to identify the person(s) in need and their requested need(s). OFR also brings the need to the attention of organizations (only with the consent of the wounded hero or the family of the wounded) who may be able offer monetary grants if the person(s) are in need of long-term financial help or has larger monetary needs than what OFR can accommodate.

OFR also collects donations to pay for the fees involved with the acquisition of airline tickets. When award miles for flights are unavailable OFR purchases the needed tickets. OFR also uses monetary donations to pay for transportation for wounded heroes and their families to and from the airport (most times in the DC area).

OFR's overriding goal is to be able to deal with each and every individual personally to give much needed emotional support, OFR wants him or her to know they are heard, cared about and honored.

HATBORO-HORSHAM EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

"STREET SMARTS"
Crime Prevention Tips
by Detective J.J. Bittenbinder

Location: the Forum at Simmons Elementary School, 411 Babylon Road, Horsham
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Tickets: Free

Crime Prevention And Personal Safety Are The Focus.

J.J. Bittenbinder Former homicide and crime-scene detective J.J. Bittenbinder, a leading expert on crime prevention and personal safety, will bring his critically acclaimed "Street Smarts" presentation to Horsham in a free event sponsored by the Innovative Learning Grant program of the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation.

Open to the public, the program will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Forum at Simmons Elementary School, 411 Babylon Road, Horsham. Earlier in the day, the 23-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and PBS crime series host will meet in two 40-minute sessions with students in the Hatboro-Horsham School District. Bittenbinder, who now teaches safety strategies to school and community groups throughout the country, was invited to the Hatboro-Horsham School District as a proactive initiative to prevent crime.

"The Hatboro-Horsham community is ahead of the curve," said Albert Hall, the district's director of security. "Most communities react after bad things happen. Hatboro-Horsham wants to stop incidents before they happen." Among the "How to Make Yourself a Tough Target" tips to be covered in the community presentation are:

  • Safety in public places
  • Car safety and car jacking
  • Preventing "after-banking" robberies
  • Children's safety needs
  • Travel and hotel safety

Bittenbinder is known for his work as host of the mid-1990s crime series "Tough Target" on PBS-TV, which focused on crimes and their prevention. He also hosted the PBS specials, "Street Smarts: How to Avoid Being a Victim," and "Street Smarts: Straight Talk for Kids, Teens & Parents." Bittenbinder also makes regular appearances on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" as a safety specialist. Currently he consults with police and fire departments. In addition to the Chicago department, Bittenbinder worked for the Cook County (Illinois) Sheriff's Department for 10 years.

His book, "Tough Target: The Street Smarts Guide to Staying Safe," includes strategies for protecting children and teaching them to protect themselves; coping with threatening situations, and keeping the home a "safe haven."

In his sessions with junior and senior high school students, Bittenbinder will discuss how to develop personal protection plans.

"Our thinking is our juniors and seniors will be moving on to college or will be thrown into the real world," said Hall. "Many of them will be in big cities; they will benefit from this the rest of their lives."

The Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation's Learning Grant Program provides funding for projects and programs designed by teachers and staff to enhance the curriculum.

HATBORO-HORSHAM EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

JAMES CARVILLE & MARY MATALIN
'All's Fair: Love, War & Politics'

Location: Hatboro-Horsham High School Theater, 899 Horsham Road, Horsham.
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Tickets: Tickets for the private reception, including preferred seating at the evening presentation, are $100. Other prices: General admission, $35 ($40 at the door); $30 for seniors, and free for students. To order tickets, visit www.hhef.org or call HHEF at 215-420-5261.

Just weeks before the Presidential election, national politics takes center stage in Horsham when Washington D.C.'s favorite political couple, James Carville and Mary Matalin, engage in a lively and entertaining exchange of bipartisan views.

Sponsored by the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation, the husband and wife - best-selling authors and political pundits who have worked for presidents for the past 25 years - will present "All's Fair: Love, War and Politics" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Hatboro-Horsham High School Theater, 899 Horsham Road, Horsham.

Special ticketing offers area residents a chance to meet the couple at a private reception at 5:30 p.m. at the Manor House at Commonwealth National Golf Club, 300 Tournament Drive, Horsham. Because the presentation is expected to sell out, HHEF strongly recommends tickets be purchased in advance. Key players on the national political stage, Carville, a Democrat, and Matalin, a Republican, will deliver a stimulating, candid and provocative analysis of the day's headlines and hot-button issues. They'll also offer a behind-the-scenes look at Washington politics.

Known as the "Ragin' Cajun," the 63-year-old Carville gained national attention for his work as lead strategist for the successful presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. He was host of CNN's "Crossfire" until its cancellation in June 2005, and now appears on the CNN news program, "The Situation Room."

Republican political consultant Matalin, 55, was assistant to President George W. Bush and counselor to Vice President Dick Chaney until 2003. She has been chief editor of Threshold Editions, a conservative publishing imprint of Simon & Shuster since March 2005.

She was a host of CNN's political debate show "Crossfire," and in 1993 hosted "Equal Time" on CNBC. She also hosted her own talk radio show in the 1990s, "The Mary Matalin Show," which aired on CBS Radio Network. In 1992, the couple was on opposite sides in the presidential race. They co-authored the best seller "All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President." In 2004, Matalin authored "Letters to My Daughter."

Carville and Matalin, who have two daughters, live in New Orleans.

Earlier in the day, the couple will address high school students.

For information about HHEF's programs, call 215-420-5261 or visit www.hhef.org.
