is among attractions at First Friday Hatboro May 2
Hundreds of visitors turned out last month for the launch of First Friday Hatboro which operates under the auspices of the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce. More than 40 establishments in the borough's business district have signed up to participate in the event, held from 6 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month, rain or shine. Gold flags displayed on First Friday designate which businesses are hosting arts and entertainment activities - all free to the public. Wine's presentation, "Everyone's A Critic," at 7 p.m. at the Union Library of Hatboro, 243 S. York Road, will include a clip on the history of movies and a discussion on the pitfalls, perks, rigors and rewards of seeing virtually every new movie. Hatboro's business district includes establishments along York Road and its side streets, from just south of Horsham Road at the south end of the borough, to just above Summit Avenue at the north end. Activities are scheduled throughout, including at the south end, a moon bounce for kids and an acoustic guitarist at Jarrett Dodge, 335 S. York Road. A block north, at Commerce Bank, 256 S. York Road, Dr. WOW! will offer lessons geared toward students in grades K through 12 on "How To Write A Check," "Planning a Budget" and "Budgeting and Saving." In the next block, live "family-friendly" music will be offered at Hatboro Federal Savings, 221 S. York Road and, across the street at Kranberry Kupboard, 216 S. York Road, fiber artist Taryn Hipp will give a spinning demonstration. Next door, at Sandy's Nail Salon, 214 S. York Road, artist Doris Lloyd will be showing her pen and ink paintings. At the north end of town, the Kidz Klub, a new toy store at 201 N. York Road, will offer a "Red Karpet Karaoke Extravaganza" giving kids an opportunity to walk the "red carpet" and sing their favorite songs, dance or share other talents. Performances will be 6:35, 7:10 and 7:45 p.m. Participants can register in person, by phone at 215-297-4490 or at events@thekidzklub.com to reserve a spot and submit a song or soundtrack.
A block south at Hatboro Baptist Church, 32 N. York Road, the "Heavenly Brew Café" will feature jazz-pop saxophonist Brian Height. Outside, in front of the church, a demonstration of colonial country dancing will be presented at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. In between, the dancers, dressed in period costumes, will stroll around town. The Amy B. Yerkes Museum, a small historic museum on the second floor of the church, will be open and next door to the church at the Hatboro Baptist Church Annex, 50 N. York Road, the museum will present a film on Hatboro's flood of 1937 and one produced in 1939 and 1940 by Hatboro's "Board of Trade" - a precursor to the chamber of commerce - to promote Hatboro's businesses and organizations. The center of town will be bursting with activities as well, including a keyboardist, classical, acoustic guitarists, a folk singer, artists, painter/illustrator, caricaturist and Elvis impersonator. For a full schedule of activities and locations, visit www.firstfridayhatboro.com. HATBORO-HORSHAM EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
"THE EMPEROR AND THE KITE" Location: Hatboro-Horsham High School, 899 Horsham Road, Horsham 19044. Time: 2 and 5 p.m. Tickets: $15; $10 for senior citizens, and free for students. Original ballet of "The Emperor and the Kite" making world premier in Horsham The book's author Jane Yolen to read before performances
"I bought the book when she was four," recalled Capponi, artistic director of the Philadelphia Dance Theatre in Mount Airy. "I read it to her and, as soon as I did, I knew it would be a great ballet." Some five years later, her vision has come true. Capponi's original ballet, "The Emperor and the Kite" will make its world premier May 3 at Hatboro-Horsham High School, 899 Horsham Road, Horsham, in performances at 2 and 5 p.m. by the Philadelphia Dance Theatre. It is being presented as part of the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation's Cultural Events Series. The book's author, Jane Yolen, from western Massachusetts, will present readings before each performance and will be available for book signings between performances. Copies of her book may be reserved for purchase by calling the foundation at 215-420-5261 or by sending an e-mail to hhefoffice@hatboro-horsham.org. Also between performances, traditional Chinese crafts, such as symbol-writing and paper-cutting will be demonstrated in the high school cafeteria, and craft activities for students will be offered. "The Emperor and the Kite" is the popular children's book about loyalty and love, set in China. How it was turned into a ballet is a story in itself. To create the production, Capponi of Mount Airy had sought a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, but was turned down. "I thought then that I'd just have to wait and we were busy anyway with other shows," she said. "Then I got cancer (in December 2006) and unbeknownst to me, my husband, Dominic, wrote to Jane Yolen for permission to do it." It was a heartfelt letter about his wife's desire to do the show and his belief that in the face of cancer, the time was now to press ahead with the project. To their surprise and delight, the author wrote back and said that her daughter is a ballet enthusiast. She shared, too, that her late husband had battled cancer. "She right away said 'sure'," said Capponi. "She was very much on board and liked the idea. It was very exciting." Capponi immediately began to choreograph the show and set it to music. "It took hours and hours and hours of listening to music to find the right thing," she said. "It had to be danceable. Asian music can be sparse and sometimes dissonant to the Western ear. I had to find music that was orchestrated and very danceable." The production includes a variety of scenes, and includes such characters as village children, fishermen and peacocks. "It's really a celebration of Asian culture," said Capponi. The book is the story of Princess Djeow's brave rescue of her father, the Emperor, from the clutches of evil men who wish to imprison him and take over the kingdom. Djeow, considered unimportant in her family's long and impressive line, proves that even the smallest can make a big difference. About 50 dancers make up the show. Guest artist Traves Butterworth, director of the Butterworth Dance Company in San Diego is cast as the Emperor. The role of Princess Djeow Seow is double cast and features Thuy Wyckoff of Lower Gwynedd in the 2 p.m. show and Jordon Sciascia of North Wales in the 5 p.m. performance. Juliana Buchanan of Mount. Airy will portray "Spirit of Courage." Because "The Emperor" is only 48 minutes, the audience will be treated to a "second act" consisting of a series of smaller ballets and dance styles and featuring the work of a number of choreographers, said Capponi. Included will be "Traveler" a contemporary abstract ballet choreographed by Jonathan Phelps of New York to the music of Afro Celt Sound System, and "Earth Intruders" a "dynamic and rhythmic" piece choreographed by Melissa Chisena of Germantown and set to the music of Bjork. Music for "The Emperor" is by Yo Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble, lighting is by Travis Whitacker of Ambler, costumes by Joan Fox of Mount Airy, and sets are by Chris Fox of Mount Airy who has traveled to China several times and is fluent in the language. Yolen, who has been called "America's Hans Christian Anderson" and the "Aesop of the 20th Century," has authored more than 170 children's, fantasy and science fiction books, including "Owl Moon, "Devil's Arithmetic," and 2007's "How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?" As part of the Hatboro-Horsham School District curriculum, fourth grade students read, "The Emperor and the Kite." Capponi and members of PDT presented three assemblies April 14 to third and fourth grade students on how the ballet came to life. Tickets for "The Emperor and the Kite" are $15, $20 for preferred seating and $10 for seniors and students, and may be ordered on line at www.hhef.org. For additional information, call HHEF at 215-420-5261. |
