Greater Hatboro Chamber Of Commerce presents First Friday Hatboro
A Celebration of the Arts in Downtown Hatboro

Elwood, 'World's Ugliest Dog,' seen on The View, CNN, will appear at this month's First Friday.

Elwood Elwood, the Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix who captured the "World's Ugliest Dog" title last year in Petaluma, Calif., will greet visitors June 6 during "First Friday" activities in downtown Hatboro.

Elwood visits A Dog's Life (and a Cat's too) Pet Boutique...
Elwood and his companion, Karen Quigley of Sewell, N.J., will greet visitors to A DOG'S LIFE (AND A CAT'S TOO), a pet boutique at 109 N. York Road, from 7 to 9 p.m. and sign copies of Elwood's book, "Everyone Loves Elwoood." Fans can have their photos taken with the celebrity pooch and make a donation to one of his favorite charities. Also, the store will be collecting used blankets, dog bowls, leaches, unopened food and other items for shelters and rescue operations.

Though Quigley says she never thought Elwood was ugly, she entered him in the 2006 contest at the insistence of a friend after she learned that the premise of the annual event is that "there truly are no ugly dogs." He took second place and returned the following year to capture the crown, not so much for his looks, some said, but because of his "loveable personality." That earned him media attention across the world and interviews on Weekend Today, CNN, The View, The 10 Morning Show and Brazilian T.V.

Spared from death after his breeder thought he was "too ugly to sell," Elwood now serves as a "goodwill ambassador" for homeless animals and those with special needs, bringing his message of love and acceptance to venues across the country.

Elwood's appearance is just one of dozens of activities slated for downtown Hatboro in the monthly "celebration of the arts." Since the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce launched the event in April, 50 merchants and service providers in the borough's business district have signed up to offer a wide range of arts and entertainment in their establishments from 6 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month, rain or shine.

More outdoor events are featured...
With summer weather approaching, First Friday Hatboro has added some outdoor events to the June offerings in the business district, which includes establishments along York Road and its side streets, from just south of Horsham Road at the south end of the borough, to just above Summit Avenue at the north end. Gold flags displayed on First Friday designate which businesses are hosting arts and entertainment activities - all free to the public.

At the south end of town...
Stone Age, offering a blend of pop, country, soul, blues and rock and roll, will perform outside JARRETT DODGE, 335 S. York Road. And WRDV-FM/WLBS-FM radio will do live interviews in front of its studios at 126 S. York Road throughout the evening.

In the center of town...
Outside MCMACKIN TIRE SERVICE at York Road and Moreland Avenue, a rock band called "The Van Burens," composed of teachers and staff from Keith Valley Middle School in Horsham will share the spotlight from 7 to 9 p.m. with "Vitamin J.A.Z., a student jazz band from the school.

Performing with The Van Burens, who offer a wide range of "family-friendly" music, from the Beatles and Tom Petty to the Go-Go's, are: guidance counselor Dr. Andy Osborne on guitar; custodian Dave Radcliff, guitar; music teacher Mindy Rubinlicht, keyboard; sixth-grade history teacher Bret D'Alonzo, drums; eighth-grade history teacher Jim Keyes on bass, and the district's instrumental music coordinator and music teacher Jim Verdeur on guitar. Vitamin J.A.Z., which recently won a Battle of the Bands at Keith Valley, features two trombonists, a saxophonist, pianist, bass player and drummer - all 7th graders.

Also set up outside McMackin's will be a booth run by "FUND FOR FELICIA," offering bake sale items and raffle baskets. The nonprofit organization raises funds for the medical care and expenses of 3-year-old Felicia Frugoli and her family. The Southampton youngster suffers from Wilms Tumor, a kidney cancer which has spread through her body. Fund for Felicia was started by Dr. Lou Trovato and his wife, Barbara, of Meetinghouse Dental Care, County Line Road, Warminster Township, where Felicia's mother, Renee worked. The dental staff helps coordinate the Fund's activities.

Heading north, HATBORO BAPTIST CHURCH, 32 N. York Road, will bring its "Heavenly Brew Café" outdoors. Featured will be fair trade coffee, tea, sodas and pizza - and live music by the pop/rock band "Heaven Bound."

Further north, THE KIDZ KLUB, a new toy store at 201 N. York Road (corner of N. York and W. Monument) will host "Kidz Komedy Night" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Youngsters are invited to tell their favorite funny or corny, (clean) joke or story. Artists Kevin Grummun and Lindsay Kovnat will be on hand to provide caricatures. Advance registration is advised. Call 267-803-3024.

Elsewhere in town, one of Hatboro's newest establishments, PRIMER, a design studio and art gallery at 15 Byberry Avenue, will present Michele Melcher, a nationally recognized award-winning illustrator.

A life-size turtle will greet visitors at SALON ON MAIN, 42 S. York Road, promoting the Union Library of Hatboro's Turbo Turtle Race fund-raiser June 8 at Hatboro Memorial Park and helping the salon launch its "green" June recycling program. Anyone bringing in unused hair care products - even sprays - will receive a Salon on Main recycling bag stuffed with coupons and samples.

Green living will be the theme at ART OF LIFE STUDIOS in the Red Barn Mall, 120 S. York Road, Suite 6, which will present a film series by Larry Menkes from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Menkes is a local expert on green living, green remodeling and environmental issues.

A full schedule of First Friday Hatboro activities is available at www.firstfridayhatboro.com, as is information about parking and how to participate, either as a business host or a performer/exhibitor.

"BUS STOP"

Warmhearted compassion and appreciation of average humanity that can be wonderfully touching and stimulating.

Synopsis:
In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and the travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse, is the passenger with the most to worry about. She's been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a young cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. The belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she's ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, "Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I'm gonna end up in Montana …"

As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the diner gets her first taste of love.
